Lagoa Jazz Fest starts this July 19, with top jazz performances

Three-day festival brings together national and international jazz musicians to Lagoa’s Sítio das Fontes Park

The famous natural park Sítio das Fontes, in Estômbar, will once again set the stage for another edition of the Lagoa Jazz Fest, a festival which started in 2003 and continues to bring many exciting jazz performances for music lovers to enjoy by the riverside.

Over 250 musicians have already performed at the festival over the years, representing countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, India, the United States of America, and others.

The 19th Lagoa Jazz Fest will be held between July 19 and 21, featuring three days of fantastic jazz performances. This year’s line-up includes a wide range of high-quality projects showcasing different styles and jazz instrumentations, from traditional to cutting-edge: Harp, Koto, Harmonica, Cimbalom, Bandoneon, Vibraphone, and more.

From solos, duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and also Big Bands, jazz lovers will experience a range of different performances.

July 19

1st Part

Lilian Raquel (voice) | Cláudio César Ribeiro (guitar)

The duo offers an exploration into modern Brazilian music with the addition of jazz’s form and freedom, a performance featuring original songs as well as interpretations of MPB classics.

2nd Part

Eduardo Cardinho 6teto – “Not Far From Paradise”
Eduardo Cardinho – vibraphone and synthesizers | João Mortágua – alto saxophone | José Diogo Martins – synthesisers and Rhodes piano | Pancho Tarabia – percussions | Frederico Heliodoro – electric bass | Jamie Peet – drums

Eduardo Cardinho stands out as “one of the most creative vibraphonists of his generation, known for his rhythmic approach and unique sound”, having received numerous prizes.

His 6teto will feature Eduardo Cardinho’s latest project, “Not Far From Paradise”, which has led to the release of an album in 2024 by the prestigious “Fresh Sound” label in Barcelona.

Michael Arbenz (piano) | Ricardo Toscano (saxophones)

A meeting between two great jazz musicians, with prestigious pianist, composer and teacher Michael Arbenz, born in Switzerland, and the 31-year-old Portuguese saxophonist Ricardo Toscano from Lisbon.

A musician with a “strong personality” and “unusual talent”, Ricardo Toscano made his name very early on in the national jazz scene, having won in 2011, at just 18, the prestigious Young Musicians Award. Ricardo has performed at some of the most important national and international festivals and also toured with international jazz musicians such as drummer Ali Jackson (Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman) and bassist Géraud Portal (Ari Hoenig, Gary Bartz). His style is influenced by the African-American heritage of the great masters of the alto saxophone: Johnny Hodges, Charlie Parker, and Jackie McLean.

Michael Arbenz has performed in various concerts and classical music festivals with musicians such as Pierre Boulez, Paul Sacher, Jürg Wyttenbach, the Ensemble Contrechamps, and Hans Zender. Glenn Ferris and Marc Johnson are some of the prestigious names who have joined his trio, New Delegation. Michael has brought together internationally renowned musicians such as Greg Osby, Wolfgang Puschnig, Muneer B. Fennell, Kent Carter, Matthieu Michel, and Dave Liebman. Since 2007 he has been playing regularly with Thomas Lähns and Florian Arbenz’s Vein Trio with a track record of 13 CDs.

2nd Part

Andrés Barrios 4teto
Andrés Barrios – piano and voice | Ruven Ruppik – percussion | Toño de Miguel – double bass | Sara Sánchez – dancer

Andrés Barrios will perform a “unique concert” at the Lagoa Jazz Fest as part of his world tour. Just 27 years old, the young artist is considered “one of the leading exponents of his generation. A classically trained, eclectic and innovative pianist with a language inspired by modern flamenco”.

1st Part

“The Cuban Piano-Cello Project”
Yaniel Matos – cello and voice | Victor Zamora – piano

Featuring an “unlikely line-up, far removed from the traditional formats of Cuban music”, this project will present “personal, daring and sophisticated interpretations of the great Cuban musicians, mixing contemporary textures and Latin Jazz colours”.

2nd Part

TOKU “European All Stars 4tet”
Toku – trumpet and voice | Giovanni Mirabassi – piano | Gianluca Renzi – double bass | Lukmil Perez – drums

Toku is considered an “emblematic figure of the Japanese jazz scene”, having collaborated with jazz musicians such as Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Chris Cheek, Lew Soloff, Phillippe Catherine, and Cindy Lauper, among others.

The Lagoa Jazz Fest is organised by Lagoa’s Municipality in collaboration with Joaquim Andrés and António Palma (curator and creative director).

Doors will open at 7pm and close at 1am, with concerts scheduled to start at 10pm.

Tickets cost €12 per person (20% off with a cultural passport, Rota do Petisco passport and Lagoa Social card) and can be purchased here or at the usual ticket outlets.
