Professor Paulo Gaspar will lead the two-day programme before joining the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense for a World Music Day concert
Lagos’s Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio will host two music workshops on October 3 and 4 as part of its World Music Day celebrations, followed by a concert on the final evening.
The programme includes a clarinet workshop on Saturday, October 3, and an Introduction to Jazz workshop for musicians playing any instrument on Sunday, October 4. Both will take place at the society’s headquarters in Edifício Conde Ferreira, Praça d’Armas, Lagos, and are open to musicians of all levels.
Sessions will combine practical and theoretical work, with both group and individual classes. Participants must bring their own instruments.
The workshops will be led by guest professor Paulo Gaspar, assisted by João Carvalheiro, artistic director, teacher and conductor of the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense.
Paulo Gaspar studied clarinet at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa and holds a master’s degree in Musical Arts from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a doctorate in Music and Musicology from the University of Évora. His career spans classical music, jazz, fado, theatre and cinema, and he has collaborated with several Portuguese orchestras and ensembles. He is currently a professor at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and regularly leads masterclasses on clarinet, improvisation and musical creativity.
For participants who are not students of the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense, registration costs €30 per workshop or €50 for both. Those attending as observers can register for €15 per workshop or €25 for both. Participation is free for students of the society.
Registrations are open until September 20. Payment should be made by bank transfer to IBAN PT50 0035 0387 0003 2314 4310 6, with proof of payment sent to filarmonicalagos@gmail.com.
The celebrations will end on October 4 with a concert by the Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio, featuring Paulo Gaspar. The performance will take place at Igreja de S. Sebastião in Lagos at 9.30pm.
Founded on May 1, 1931, the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio has maintained a music school in Lagos for decades and currently has a band of around 40 musicians spanning several generations.
