Discover the story of Porches’ mysterious lion, the historic restaurant that keeps the legend alive and the surprising coincidence with a Portuguese fashion brand
In the heart of the Algarve, away from the crowded beaches and sprawling resort developments, lies the historic village of Porches. Known for its traditional pottery, whitewashed houses, and some of the most elaborate chimneys in southern Portugal, the village is also home to one of the Algarve’s most enduring local legends: the story of a mysterious lion that is said to have appeared here many years ago.
Today, that legend survives in different ways. It lives on most visibly through O Leão de Porches, one of the Algarve’s best-known restaurants, and in the lion imagery found in the village itself.
Curiously, the name also has an apparent echo in the Portuguese fashion brand Lion of Porches – although the company says there is no connection whatsoever between its name and either the Algarve village or its local legend.

An intriguing coincidence, perhaps, although one that inevitably makes us wonder whether the two stories really are entirely unrelated.
The origins of the Lion of Porches are shrouded in mystery. Local tradition tells of a lion that appeared in the village long ago, an unlikely event in a rural Algarve community where lions have never naturally existed, obviously.
Whether the story was based on fact, misunderstanding, or pure imagination has long since been lost to history, but the tale became embedded in local folklore and passed from generation to generation.
Perhaps the most visible reminder of the legend can still be seen atop one of the village’s most distinctive chimneys. Porches is renowned throughout the Algarve for its ornate chimneys, many dating from the 18th century, when wealthy families competed to display their status through increasingly elaborate architectural designs.
Some resemble castles, whilst others feature religious symbols or intricate geometric patterns, but one of the most recognisable is crowned by a lion adorned with vine leaves above O Leão de Porches restaurant.
Hidden behind ancient walls in the centre of the village, O Leão de Porches occupies a historic farmhouse dating back to 1727. The property was restored in the 1970s, carefully preserving its Algarve character through original architectural features and tranquil courtyards that evoke the region’s rich heritage.
The restaurant’s reputation extends well beyond the village itself. Recognised by the Michelin Guide, it has developed a loyal following among residents, international visitors, and discerning diners seeking a refined Algarve culinary experience, becoming, in many ways, the modern guardian of the lion legend.
The building also bears the legacy of the late Irish artist Patrick Swift, one of the Algarve’s most influential cultural figures. Swift, who co-founded Porches Pottery in 1968, played a pivotal role in preserving traditional Algarve craftsmanship and contributed significantly to the restoration and interior design of the restaurant.
His influence can still be felt throughout the village, from its pottery workshops to its restored buildings and artistic heritage. Today, Porches Pottery remains in the hands of his family.
And then there is the other Lion of Porches. The Portuguese clothing brand shares not only the lion imagery but, remarkably, also the name of this small Algarve village. Given the local legend, the overlap might seem too striking to be accidental.
The company, however, has confirmed that its name has no connection to Porches in the Algarve or to the story of its mysterious lion. The similarity is, officially at least, pure coincidence.
The brand has built a distinctly British-inspired identity and today operates across multiple international markets, offering collections for men, women, and children. Yet for anyone familiar with Porches and its folklore, it is difficult not to be intrigued by the shared name and imagery.
Could there once have been some distant inspiration, forgotten or undocumented along the way? There is no evidence to suggest so, but the coincidence adds another curious layer to an already enigmatic tale.
That is perhaps what makes the Lion of Porches so remarkable. Whether or not a lion ever wandered into Porches is almost beside the point. What matters is that the legend has become part of the village’s character, woven into its architecture, its cultural heritage, and the stories that continue to be told by those who call it home.
