From peaceful hideaways and family flavours to days on the waves
At the southwestern tip of the Algarve, Sagres still retains its own personality, shaped by the Atlantic, its natural surroundings and a long-standing relationship with the sea.
Beyond its viewpoints and beaches, the town offers a range of experiences: staying in a peaceful retreat surrounded by the landscape of the Costa Vicentina, dining at a family-run restaurant with more than four decades of history, or learning a new sport out on the ocean.
Between Sagres and Vila do Bispo, within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, Casa Nook offers a peaceful base from which you can explore the region.
Opened in May 2022 by Afonso Osório Vassalo, Diogo Castro and Tomás Alcobia – three friends from Sintra who are keen surfers and share a passion for the sea – it was born from a desire to offer an alternative to more traditional forms of accommodation.
“We opted for a Bed & Breakfast concept adapted to the way we, as millennials, like to travel,” explains managing partner Diogo Castro.
The concept combines elements usually associated with hostels, including a shared kitchen, a large communal breakfast table and social areas, with private rooms and hotel-style amenities. The result is a relaxed and practical setting for guests who value independence and flexibility, whether travelling for leisure or work.
There are four double rooms with private bathrooms and three studios, particularly suited to families and small groups, all with self-check-in and breakfast included.
The name was chosen to capture the atmosphere the founders wanted to create. “We chose the name because it evokes somewhere small, peaceful, hidden and cosy,” explains Diogo, adding that it reflects the secluded setting and the invitation to slow down and enjoy the tranquillity.
“The most important thing for us is that guests feel at home, that they feel welcome and genuinely looked after,” he adds.
Casa Nook is part of a small collection of accommodation units along the Costa Vicentina, with properties also in Arrifana and Odeceixe, all sharing a similar philosophy of closeness to nature and a more relaxed style of stay.
When it comes to places where food and memories go hand in hand, Restaurante Carlos is a fine example. Opened in Sagres in February 1983 by Carlos and Ana Diogo, more than four decades later it remains a family-run business.
Miguel Diogo, the founders’ son and current manager, was born and raised in Sagres and joined the family business at a young age, taking over its management in 2012.
He remembers the days when his grandmother Vitalina and his aunt Júlia, his father’s older sister, ran the kitchen, and speaks proudly of the dishes that are still prepared using recipes from both sides of the family.
That family atmosphere carries through to the dining room, which retains touches of the Algarve of the 1980s. Although the restaurant was renovated in 2015, its original character was carefully preserved. “We kept the décor in the style my mother likes and made sure to preserve that feeling of being in your parents’ or grandparents’ home,” explains Miguel.
The menu follows the same philosophy: making the most of what the region has to offer, with an emphasis on fresh fish and seafood, whilst preserving Algarve flavours passed down through generations. Specialities include ‘Peixe Especial’, a fish dish based on Miguel’s grandmother’s recipe; feijoada de choco (cuttlefish and bean stew); oven-baked octopus; bacalhau à Carlos, the restaurant’s own salt cod dish; and camarão à Carlos, their signature prawn dish. For two, there are also classics such as fish and seafood cataplana, a traditional Algarve dish; massada de peixe, a hearty fish pasta stew; and arroz de marisco, Portuguese seafood rice.
Homemade desserts maintain that connection to the region, featuring almond and other familiar Algarve flavours. The wine selection follows the same local approach, including Algarve labels such as Paxá and Lagoa Premium.
The aim is not to reinvent the cuisine of Sagres, but to represent it through a genuine dining experience without unnecessary formality, where produce and tradition take centre stage.
The regular presence of Carlos and Ana Diogo further reinforces the family connection to a restaurant that forms part not only of their own story, but also of the town’s. To round off the Sagres experience, you cannot ignore the sea.
Freeride Surf School welcomes surfers of all skill levels, from those who have never picked up a board to more experienced riders.
Founded in 2002 by siblings Marta and João Mealha, originally from Loulé, the school has become an established part of the Sagres surfing community, where the Freeride Surf Center is based.
During bathing season, its activities extend to Praia da Cordoama, with a Beach Hut right on the sand. “I love surfing here, teaching and spending the whole day on this beach,” says Marta Mealha.
As well as teaching the fundamentals of the sport, Freeride Surf School aims to share knowledge about the ocean and encourage respect for the environment.
“Our lessons are very focused on technique and safety, but we also want them to be relaxed and fun,” says the founder and instructor. Lasting around two and a half hours, lessons cater for different abilities, from beginner and intermediate to advanced, with instructors accompanying students both in and out of the water.
“We want them to learn, feel safe and come out of the water happy and wanting to return,” says Marta. In a relaxed setting, the experience combines learning and the simple pleasure of being in the water.
There are many ways to experience Sagres, whether spending a few days unwinding or heading out on adventures in nature.
On this itinerary, Casa Nook offers a peaceful stay, Restaurante Carlos brings together flavours rooted in local history, and Freeride Surf School offers a different way to connect with the sea, which has long played a defining role in life in Sagres.
