Embrace the opportunity to be a tourist at home and discover the hidden treasures that lie just off the beaten path

Although we spend most of the year looking forward to the warm summer days, sometimes the months of July and August can get a little too much, and some well-deserved serenity is needed, away from the bustling summer crowds.

So, on this occasion, we decide to visit the João Clara Winery, a traditional, family-run establishment located on the EN125, just before Aqualand.

João Clara Wine

For those looking for something a little different, and to immerse themselves in the authentic spirit of the Algarve, a visit to this winery is well worth it!

Upon arriving, we were greeted warmly by the owner, who gave us a detailed tour of the winery. The intimate atmosphere and personal touch immediately made us feel very glad to be there.

As we walked through the vineyards and facilities, we were captivated by the dedication and personal touches that have been poured into this business.

The winery produces an impressive variety of 13 different wines, amounting to about 55,000 bottles a year. Each wine tells a story of its own, reflecting the passion and expertise of the family behind it.

We had the pleasure of visiting the various sections where the wines are produced and aged. The process, as explained by the owner, is a blend of both tradition and innovation, ensuring that each bottle of wine is of the highest quality.

We also had the opportunity to meet some of the farmyard animals that add to the rustic charm of the place.

The highlight of our visit was, without a doubt, the wine tasting session. Seated in a cosy area with the owner, we sampled an array of their wines which were very impressive, and the owner’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience even more delightful – she had even put on an impressive selection of tapas to go with the wine tasting.

When we concluded our visit, we couldn’t help but feel immensely grateful for the serene and enriching experience we had at João Clara, and honoured by the fact that this was done by none other than the owner herself! We recommend to book in advance to ensure you receive the full, unhurried experience this lovely place has to offer.

Vila Vita Biergarten

On our way back to Carvoeiro, we made a stop for dinner at Vila Vita’s Biergarten.

Nestled away from the crowded hotspots, this Bavarian-style beer garden was the perfect place to unwind. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it an ideal spot for a meal, snack, or even just a refreshing beer. The Bavarian cuisine was of excellent quality, adding quite a different twist to our day.

Vila Vita Biergarten

For those looking to explore the Algarve beyond its famous beaches and bustling tourist spots, a visit to João Clara Winery followed by a meal at Vila Vita’s Biergarten on the way back, offers the perfect repose.
