A tourist at home: Finding a little slice of calm at Quinta do Sol

The luxury of being unhurried, with time to chat, taste, laugh and enjoy the present while appreciating the beauty of natural surroundings in unexpected ways

October always feels like a bit of a reset in the Algarve. The frantic pace of summer begins to soften, the beaches become a little quieter, and there’s a welcome freshness in the mornings that reminds you summer won’t last forever.

It’s the perfect time to rediscover the region, and for this edition I stumbled across somewhere new.

Just a few minutes from Carvoeiro, tucked away down a country lane that makes you wonder if your sat nav has taken a wrong turn, sits Quinta do Sol. Although it only officially opened earlier this year, it already feels as though it’s been part of the landscape forever.

Surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside, it’s one of those places where the outside world seems to disappear the moment you arrive.

From the road, you’d never imagine what lies beyond the gates. It’s surprisingly peaceful. Despite being so close to one of the Algarve’s busiest tourist towns, it feels wonderfully removed from it all, like a little hidden retreat.

The estate has been created with the idea of bringing together wine, wellness, hospitality and nature in one place. Rather than simply being somewhere to sample a few glasses of wine, Quinta do Sol has been designed as a destination where visitors can stay, relax, celebrate, enjoy events and experience the vineyard lifestyle all within the same beautiful setting.

The vines themselves have been carefully planted and nurtured under the Algarve sunshine, and the whole project has clearly been years in the making before finally opening its doors this year.

My reason for visiting wasn’t actually the wine, although that certainly became a welcome bonus later in the morning. I’d booked onto one of their’ Pilates and Brunch events, and honestly, I couldn’t think of a nicer way to welcome the changing season. The class took place outdoors with the vineyards stretching out around us.

There was something extremely calming about moving through a Pilates session surrounded by nature instead of staring at four gym walls. Whether you’re a Pilates regular or someone who only dusts off an exercise mat every few months, it was one of those classes that left you feeling energised instead of exhausted.

A huge part of what made the morning so enjoyable was the atmosphere created by their host, Alice.

She was very friendly, welcoming and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing the estate, and made it all feel more like being invited to someone’s beautiful home than attending an organised event.

Of course, after working up an appetite, brunch was waiting. Forget limp pastries and supermarket fruit. This was a colourful spread of wholesome dishes made with fresh ingredients that managed to feel both healthy and indulgent at the same time. Fresh breads, seasonal fruits, vibrant salads and plenty of delicious homemade touches made it the kind of meal you linger over rather than rush through.

And because this is, after all, a winery, there was absolutely no suggestion that healthy eating should come at the expense of good wine. Quite the opposite. We were invited to sample several of Quinta do Sol’s own wines, and it would have been rude not to. Sitting amongst the vines with a glass in hand after a morning of gentle exercise made perfect sense.

It felt wonderfully unhurried, and perhaps that’s the real luxury these days. Not extravagance, but time. Time to chat, taste, laugh andenjoy where you are.

What impressed me most about Quinta do Sol wasn’t any one individual element, but how naturally everything fitted together. Wellness, food, wine and hospitality aren’t separate experiences here; they’re simply different parts of the same philosophy. It’s a place that encourages you to relax and appreciate the surroundings.

It’s also refreshing to see somewhere offering experiences that appeal equally to visitors and those of us lucky enough to live here. Residents are always searching for something a little different from the usual restaurant lunch or beach day, while tourists increasingly want authentic experiences beyond the typical holiday checklist. Quinta do Sol manages to tick both boxes beautifully.

As the Algarve continues to evolve, it’s encouraging to see businesses investing in experiences rather than simply attractions. Places where you can spend several hours, or even a few days, genuinely switching off.

With vineyard stays, wine tastings, wellness events and seasonal gatherings all forming part of what they offer, it feels like the beginning of something quite special.

For me, that’s exactly what ‘A Tourist at Home’ is all about. It’s discovering somewhere that reminds you there are still hidden corners of the Algarve waiting to surprise you, even if you’ve lived here for years.

Sometimes you don’t need to travel hundreds of miles to find somewhere that feels like an escape. Sometimes it’s only 10 minutes from Carvoeiro. You just have to know where to look.
