The 7th edition of the international boxing tournament drew 128 competitors from countries across Europe and beyond
The 7th edition of the Algarve Box Cup took place between January 23 and 25 at the Jacinto Correia Sports Pavilion in Lagoa, delivering a strong weekend of competition and atmosphere.
Across three days, the tournament brought together 128 competitors from 44 boxing clubs from 12 countries from all over Europe and beyond, with fighters competing across junior, youth and elite categories for both men and women.
This year, the tournament featured the Junior (U17) and Youth (U19) categories for the first time, whilst the Elite division once again delivered high-quality fights, reinforcing the Algarve Box Cup as a benchmark in European Olympic boxing, organisers said.
Prize money in the Elite category was awarded based on the number of matches won. Boxers who won a quarter-final, semi-final and final received €500, whilst those winning a semi-final and final were awarded €300. Boxers who won a final after a single match received €200.
Medals were awarded to the top three athletes in each Elite weight category, with Youth and Junior boxers placing first, second and third also receiving medals. Additional awards were presented to the Best Male and Best Female Boxers across the Elite, Youth and Junior categories.
The tournament also recognised its standout athletes:
Elite Men: Martin Skogheim – Romerike Bokseklubb (Norway)
Elite Women: Rhea Kanu – Halton Boxing Club (UK)
U19 Men: Dorian Scamardella – White Hart Lane BA (UK)
U19 Women: Adriana Muñoz Ginés – Kaka Boxing Club (Spain)
The team rankings delivered moments of excitement, with Kaka Boxing Club from Seville finishing top of the table after a strong performance across all categories. Barton Hill ABC (UK) and Torfaen Warriors (Wales) followed, with second place decided on overall victories after both clubs finished with the same number of gold medals.
Efficiently organised and featuring a broad international presence and valuable sporting exchange between athletes, the event reenforced the Algarve Box Cup’s position as a reference and a platform for young talent. Widely regarded as the largest boxing competition in the region, it has already become one of the most respected tournaments on the national calendar.
This year’s edition reinforced that reputation, with teams praising the organisation, sporting level and overall experience in Lagoa, alongside a strong sense of camaraderie.
Matches were broadcast live on YouTube, whilst the BoxerBase app allowed teams and spectators to follow bouts, results and timings in real time.
The competition was organised by the Associação Issu Algarve in partnership with the Municipality of Lagoa, Lagoa Parish Council, ESPAMOL School, Hotel Riverside, Portuguese Boxing Federation, Algarve Boxing Association, Publirádio, and Flexipup, with the support of Sweet Spot and W4M.
