Located in the heart of Lagos, Mar d’Estórias has transformed heritage, gastronomy, and culture into a vibrant experience of discovery
In the historic centre of Lagos, among old streets and walls filled with memories, there is a space that, over the past decade, has become a meeting point between past and present.
In June, Mar d’Estórias celebrated its 10th anniversary, establishing itself as a place where Portugal is experienced through the senses, stories, and products that reveal the country from within.

More than just a project, it was born from a persistent desire to give shape to an idea of Portuguese identity meant to be lived and shared. The vision began to take form in the Algarve, driven by the wish to create a space dedicated to the most authentic side of Portugal.
Over time, that initial idea grew stronger and more defined, eventually becoming a real, welcoming place with its own identity.
Lagos eventually proved to be the ideal setting for the project. However, the building that would house it did not appear immediately, and different possibilities had to be explored before finding the right space.
Among them, an old fire station stood out, as it met the necessary conditions and had a strong connection to the local area. More than just a space, it carried a long history that predates Mar d’Estórias itself.
Since the 15th century, the building has had many lives, serving as a church, a maritime institution, a warehouse, and later a fire station. It went through different functions until entering several decades of silence, from 1986 to 2016.
The restoration aimed to preserve that memory, respecting the original architecture and allowing the building to continue telling its own story. The result is a space where architecture is not just a backdrop, but part of the experience.
Entering Mar d’Estórias is like crossing a threshold of time, discovering unexpected corners and letting yourself be guided by Portuguese tradition.
Over the years, the project has established itself as a reference point in the historic centre of Lagos. Not only because of what it offers, but also because of the way it builds a bridge between the tourism that arrives in the Algarve and the cultural and productive diversity of Portugal.
Between a shop, a grocery space, a wine cellar, and a dedicated gastronomic area, ending in a terrace with a privileged view over the historic centre, Mar d’Estórias offers a journey through the country without ever leaving the building.
In June 2026, this journey was marked by the celebration of its 10th anniversary. A symbolic moment that brought together those who are part of its story and reinforced the idea of continuity in a project that does not close in on itself but instead reinvents itself over time.
A decade later, Mar d’Estórias remains faithful to its original purpose: giving voice to what is Portuguese, through a space that invites discovery and sharing, in the heart of a city that continues to be a meeting point of cultures.
