The 51st edition of the race promises new challenges, with revamped routes through stunning landscapes, highlighting the region’s capacity to host top-tier events

Volta ao Algarve (or Algarve Tour), which attracts thousands every year, returns for its 51st edition this Wednesday, February 19. As part of this year’s competition, the route has been revamped to highlight the region’s iconic scenery, enhancing the sporting spectacle even more.

Thousands of spectators and cycling enthusiasts from around the world will be able to see the competition as it passes through the region, from the coast to the hills.

There will be five stages, starting in Portimão, and covering almost 750 kilometres over five days, with highlights including sprint finishes in Lagos and Tavira, as well as the challenging ascent to Fóia (in Monchique), and other iconic moments such as the classic-style stage to Faro and the individual time trial at the top of Malhão, where the title favourites will fight for victory.

Additionally, the Algarve Granfondo 2025 will also take place, on February 22 (Saturday). During the open, non-competitive event, participants will have the opportunity to explore some of the most authentic landscapes in the Algarve hinterland. Cyclists will be able to select between two routes – the 130km Granfondo, which is designed for more experienced cyclists, and the 90km Mediofondo, which is designed for those with less cycling experience. Both will have timed segments to increase the challenge and provide an even more immersive experience.

In recent years, the Algarve region has emerged as a top destination for sports tourism and is increasingly extending its appeal throughout the year by hosting cycling events, motoring competitions such as the MotoGP Grand Prix, international golf tournaments, and nautical competitions.

According to the President of the Algarve Tourism Board, André Gomes, the Volta ao Algarve “is not just a major sporting event, it is a privileged showcase for the diversity and quality of the Algarve”. He believes the race “demonstrates to the world that the Algarve is more than just sun, beaches, and great infrastructure; it is a region with stunning landscapes, excellent infrastructure, and a unique capability to host world-class events during the entire year”.

André Gomes highlights that the “combination of sport, tourism, and sustainability” is driving the Algarve towards “a more competitive and balanced future”, solidifying its status as a “benchmark destination for sustainable sports tourism”.
