A mix of new openings and updated favourites is reshaping the town’s food scene
Carvoeiro’s food and drink scene has been quietly evolving, and over the past year in particular, there has been a noticeable shift – more variety, more personality, and some genuinely exciting new additions alongside long-standing favourites stepping up their game.
Take MataBixo, for example. A true family business that has been part of the town since 2000, it is one of those places that locals have always known and loved – but now it starts a fresh new chapter.

After a well needed renovation last year, the space feels brighter and more modern, whilst still holding onto its relaxed, welcoming vibe.
The sea and beach views are a big part of the appeal, especially as the sun goes down. It is open every day from 11am through to 1am, making it just as suited for a lazy snack as it is for late-night drinks.

The menu is very casual and comforting – burgers, hot dogs, toasties – paired with a strong drinks offering, including a large selection of gins, plus cocktails and mocktails. It has also become a go-to for evening drinks and is now available for private hire and events, which adds another layer to its appeal.

Then there is Faustino’s Steakhouse, a much-anticipated arrival in town. Already well known in Alvor, Faustino’s has brought its reputation for excellent meat to Carvoeiro – and it feels like something the town genuinely needed.

Open daily from 3pm until late, it is all about quality cuts of steak, cooked properly and served without fuss.

But it is not just about the meat – there is a solid menu of starters and desserts, and a carefully chosen selection of red wines that pair beautifully with the main event. It is the kind of place you go to when want a proper meal, whether for a special occasion or just a good night out.
For something completely different, UVAE Wine Experience has added a more experiential angle to Carvoeiro’s food and beverage scene.

This is not your typical bar or restaurant; it is more like a wine masterclass brought to life. Guests are taken through a series of tastings in an interactive format, with carefully selected snacks designed to enhance each wine. It is immersive, very educational, and a lot of fun.
The catch? You will need to book in advance – but it is well worth it if you are looking for something a bit more unique.

Daytime options have also had a boost with Chef’s Café, open daily from 8am to 5pm. Opened last year, it is the realisation of a long-held dream to create a bakery and pastry-focused café. Run by Harald (of Chef’s Kitchen) and his wife Sylvie, the concept leans into a French-style viennoiserie pastry shop.

Think buttery croissants, fresh bread, homemade cakes, artisan coffees, and a menu built around breakfast, brunch, and light lunches.

Toasties and focaccias feature heavily, alongside a few more substantial dishes. But everything has that fresh, just-made feel. It is quickly become a favourite for a relaxed start to the day.

And finally, a quieter but very welcome change can be found at Square, in Monte Carvoeiro. Under new management, it is now a friendly Italian spot with a well-rounded menu and a noticeably warm atmosphere.
Open every day from 3pm (closed Mondays), it offers a great selection of classic Italian dishes at reasonable prices. Tucked slightly away from the main crowds, it is the kind of place you go when you want good food without the hustle – simple, tasty, and easy-going.
All in all, Carvoeiro feels like it is finding a really nice balance right now, holding onto its charm whilst quietly expanding what it has to offer.

Whether it is a long-standing favourite reinventing itself, a strong new steakhouse, a creative wine experience, or a fresh café concept, there is a sense that the town’s food scene is growing without losing what makes it special.
