Traditional convent sweets, entertainment and music return to Lagoa from July 29 to August 2

The 22nd Mostra do Doce Conventual de Lagoa returns from July 29 to August 2, celebrating one of Portugal’s most cherished culinary traditions with four evenings of convent sweets, regional products and live entertainment.

Held at Centro Cultural Convento de São José and its surrounding grounds, the event is free to attend and runs daily from 7pm until midnight.

Organised by Lagoa Municipality, the festival brings together producers from across the country, offering visitors the opportunity to sample an array of handmade convent pastries, cakes, jams, honey and Algarve specialities, including medronho firewater.

Live demonstrations will showcase traditional production techniques, whilst local artisans and exhibitors will share the stories behind their products.

Convent sweets are among Portugal’s most distinctive gastronomic traditions. Originally created by nuns using simple ingredients such as sugar, egg yolks and almonds, many of the recipes have been preserved for centuries and remain an important part of the country’s culinary heritage.

Alongside the food, visitors can enjoy a programme of live music and cultural performances throughout the four-day festival, which aims to celebrate local traditions, preserve historic recipes and promote the region’s rich gastronomic identity.
