Community-led initiative awaits city council approval as petition gains support

A proposal to create a new municipal green park in Lagos has received unanimous support from all political parties at the municipal assembly, marking a major step forward for the citizen-led Movimento Lagos Mais Verde initiative.

The vote took place on April 27 after supporters gathered at the assembly to present the project and call for more green spaces and tree planting across the municipality.

The proposal focuses on transforming the former Lagos EB 2,3 School site, which has been abandoned for more than 10 years, into a multifunctional green park near town hall.

Plans include an urban forest using the Miyawaki method – which is based on quickly planting indigenous plants, a method which has been successfully in Asia for over 50 years for the purpose of environmental conservation and better water retention.

The park will feature walking trails, picnic areas, a children’s playground, community spaces, a café kiosk and potentially a new municipal library.

Organisers described the vote as a “major victory” but stressed the project still requires approval from the municipal council before moving forward.

“This first major victory was made possible by a united community that showed, through its presence and voice, that Lagos wants more green and a better future,” the movement said in a statement shared online.

Supporters say the park would help address rising temperatures, biodiversity loss and water management challenges, whilst creating a space focused on well-being and community interaction.

Campaign organisers are continuing to collect signatures through a public petition and are expected to present more detailed plans to a specialised assembly committee in the coming months.
