Founded in Sagres by Chitra and Roman Stern in 2010, the group has grown with purpose from the Algarve to Lisbon

The Martinhal Sagres Family Beach Resort is celebrating 15 years since it first opened its doors in 2010.

Created by Chitra and Roman Stern, the resort was the first in what would become a wider hospitality and real estate group focused on family-oriented travel in Portugal.

In its early years, Martinhal Sagres quickly attracted international attention. In 2012, just two years after opening, it was named “Europe’s Leading Villa Resort” by the World Travel Awards.

Additional milestones followed, including another accolade from the World Travel Awards in 2013, this time for “Portugal’s Leading Family Resort”.

The resort also introduced annual events such as the Art, Design and Wellbeing Weekend, the Martinhal Quicksilver Surf Week and the Martinhal Olympic Triathlon, which supported local charity NECI.

As the brand expanded, it opened further locations in Quinta do Lago, Lisbon’s Chiado district, and later in Parque das Nações. The Group also launched the United Lisbon International School in 2020.

Most recently, Martinhal Sagres was formally recognised by the Vila do Bispo Municipality for its contribution to the region’s economy and local community.
