More than 250 sailors from over 40 countries expected in major international event
Portimão will host the World Sailing Inclusive Sailing World Championships from October 1 to 11, 2026, bringing more than 250 sailors from over 40 countries to the Algarve, incorporating both the main championship racing and the Inclusive Development Programme (IDP).
The championships aim to promote inclusion and equal opportunities in sport, placing sailors with disabilities at its core and highlighting sailing as an activity accessible to all. The competition is “designed to celebrate ability over limitation”, offering elite racers and members of the wider Para-Inclusive community the opportunity to “compete with purpose, visibility, and equity”.
After a successful bid led by Vela Solidária Association Portimão’s strong track record in delivering major international events was highlighted, including the Hansa World Championships, as well as its ability to meet the complex demands of Para-Inclusive competitions.
Hosted by Portimão-based association Vela Solidária, the event is considered the world’s largest inclusive sailing competition and reflects more than 15 years of work promoting sailing for all.
“The challenge is enormous, and the desire to welcome sailors from all over the world and provide them with a unique experience is what motivates and fills Vela Solidária, the Municipality of Portimão, the Portuguese Sailing Federation and the Portuguese State with pride in their commitment to World Sailing in organising this world championship, which we hope will become a benchmark among major international inclusive sailing events,” said Luís Brito, president of Vela Solidária.
“The World Sailing Inclusion Championships are about more than medals. They are about creating opportunities, building pathways and proving that high-performance sport and inclusion go hand in hand,” said Hannah Stodel, representing World Sailing. “Portimão offers us the environment, experience and ambition to take this event to a new level.”
Portimão mayor Álvaro Bila said the city is proud to host the competition, highlighting its strong connection to the sea and sports, continuing to strengthen its position in global sporting events.
