This year’s Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival attracted 1300 participants from 29 countries

The 15th Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival, which took place in Sagres between October 3 and 6, attracted 1300 participants from 29 countries.

The festival transformed Sagres into the epicentre of biodiversity, welcoming enthusiasts from all over the world, reaffirming Sagres’ status as one of the best places for birdwatching and nature exploration in Portugal.

The festival is a great opportunity to connect with nature through a varied programme that goes far beyond traditional birdwatching sessions.

With 146 species identified, the event’s biggest highlight was the sighting of the rare Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus), a migratory species that attracted particular attention among observers.

The festival’s activities showed a different side of the Algarve, going far beyond its beaches, featuring tours, walks, lectures, and challenges designed for children, which guaranteed moments of learning and leisure for the whole family.

The festival demonstrated its positive impact on the local community, promoting sustainable tourism and highlighting Sagres as a destination of choice for those seeking deeper contact with nature.

“Already a reference for ornithology lovers and everyone who wants to discover the best that the Algarve has to offer”, the Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival’s atmosphere celebrating biodiversity once again showed that Sagres shines as a privileged venue for the “celebration of wildlife”, as shared by the municipality of Vila do Bispo.

The event was organised by Vila do Bispo City Council in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and the Almargem Association, with the participation of 59 local partners, including accommodation, restaurants, entertainment companies, tourist attractions and other establishments in the region.
