Five stages, world-class teams and even more action across the region

The Volta ao Algarve cycling tour is back in 2026 with a refreshed format designed to make the race more unpredictable. The 52nd edition of the race runs from February 18 to 22, covering almost 700km across five stages in the Algarve.

A strong international peloton is confirmed, including 12 WorldTour teams alongside ProTeams and Portuguese Continental teams. João Almeida returns as one of the main favourites, with Juan Ayuso lining up as a key rival. Several other big names from the international cycling scene are also expected, underlining the race’s growing status, including Richard Carapaz, Julian Alaphilippe, Filippo Ganna and Arnaud De Lie.

The race starts in Vila Real de Santo António with a flat opening stage, featuring the golden kilometre on the town’s cobbled main street, where three bonus sprints are packed into just over 1km. Stage two heads into the hills with a more demanding climb at Alto da Fóia in Monchique, whilst day three brings an individual time trial in Vilamoura, testing riders over a 19.5km technical urban course.

Stage four runs from Albufeira to Lagos, with a finishing circuit that could suit sprinters but may also cause splits in the peloton. The race wraps up with a decisive final stage from Faro to Alto do Malhão in Loulé, featuring a double ascent of the climb.

Race organisers say the changes are aimed at keeping the event competitive right to the end, with more action across all five days. “In the Algarve, the spectacle is always guaranteed,” race director Ezequiel Mosquera said.

All stages will be broadcast live in Portugal on RTP2 and RTP Play, and internationally on Eurosport and HBO Max, continuing the race’s strong global exposure and economic impact for the region.
