Without losing sight of tradition, the new management connects cuisine, wine, and tourism
The popular Sueste restaurant – set right on the harbour in Ferragudo, with stunning views over the Arade River and Portimão – has reopened under new management with a refreshed concept that emphasises an experience rooted entirely in local flavours, both in its cuisine and its wine selection.

The main focus of the new owner, Pedro Garcia de Matos, is essentially to preserve the restaurant’s identity whilst introducing a more contemporary approach.
“Our signature dish remains grilled fish, but we want to serve more seafood,” he revealed during the inauguration on April 16.
The reopening comes with a broader vision, new offerings, and unique experiences. The entrepreneur aims to provide more than just a meal, seeking to connect Sueste with Quinta do Arvad in Estômbar – the group’s wine project – along the Arade River.

In addition to this link between the coast and the interior, there are further innovations in an effort to offer something distinctive within the regional landscape.
Thanks to the Sueste water taxi, which operates exclusively for the restaurant, guests can now take a scenic boat trip to Quinta do Arvad for wine tastings, whilst boat owners cruising the Arade River can enjoy the restaurant’s take-out picnics.

Despite the changes, the new management, led by Pedro alongside his daughters, Mafalda and Rita Garcia de Matos, ensures that the essence of the venue remains intact.
The goal is to preserve the authentic, welcoming, and family-friendly atmosphere that has made Sueste a landmark, while simultaneously offering a more modern experience capable of attracting a younger crowd.

“We want everyone to continue feeling welcome,” emphasises Pedro Garcia de Matos, highlighting the importance of balancing tradition and innovation.
This intention is also reflected in the kitchen, where chef Irlene Rios Ferreira, with over 15 years of experience in her native Brazil, accepted the challenge of creating the new menu.
There are classics that couldn’t be left out and new dishes inspired by the sea and local produce. “Keeping up with the evolution of gastronomy is very important. I was given the freedom to create, and the intention was to introduce new house specialties,” reveals the chef.

The menu reinforces the connection to the region, highlighting the typical flavours of the Algarve and always-fresh ingredients, paired with a selection of Arvad wines, produced by the group.

This blend of gastronomy, wine tourism, and natural landscape reflects the project’s diversification strategy. Thus, some signature dishes remain, meeting the expectations of regular customers, whilst new creations pay homage to the Algarve.
