Artist Laurence Ross showcases recent work in Portugal debut
An exhibition by Laurence Ross is now on display at Lagoa Library, marking his debut show in Portugal. Titled Abstracts, the exhibition runs until May 22, and brings together a selection of the artist’s work created over the past five years.
Ross, who splits his time between London and his home near Carvoeiro, did not follow a straightforward path into the art world. He met the entry requirements for a leading London Art College at just 15, but later chose a different route, completing two academic degrees before building a career in law.
Even so, painting never really left him. Around 12 years ago, shortly before retiring, and after briefly exploring sculpture, he returned to painting. Acrylics became his medium of choice – flexible, vibrant and quick-drying, which suits his pace.
Whilst Ross enjoys illustrative painting and portraiture, his main focus in recent years has been abstract painting.
The works featured in this exhibition highlight this direction, showcasing smaller pieces created in both England and Portugal.
Rather than sticking to one recognisable style, Ross prefers to experiment. His work explores different approaches to colour, texture and form, aiming to connect with viewers on a visual and emotional level. All the pieces in the exhibition are acrylic on canvas.
There is no fixed theme running through the collection. Instead, the common thread lies in the process. Each painting evolves over time, often moving far from its original inspiration. Layers are added, directions change, and compositions shift until a balance is reached. Ross sees this as a process of creating order from chaos.
Around 20 works are on display at the library due to space limitations, although more can be viewed online on his website.
The Abstracts exhibition is open to visitors from Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, at Lagoa Library. The exhibition is closed on weekends and public holidays.
