Coastal path network features 31.5 kilometres allowing visitors to explore the natural surroundings of the region
The grand opening of the Southwest Coastal Ecovia and Cycle Path (Ecovia e Ciclovia do Litoral Sudoeste) took place on January 18 in Vila do Bispo. This project offers cyclists and hikers the chance to discover the stunning western Algarve coast.
The network comprises 31.5 kilometres of paths for both cycling and walking, divided into two sections. The first is a 26km path connecting Sagres to Aljezur, whilst the second is a shorter 5.5km cycling path linking the Quatro Estradas roundabout in Sagres to Cape Saint Vincent, the southwesternmost point of Portugal and mainland Europe.
Both paths were designed to utilize low-traffic roads with breathtaking views, providing an excellent opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy the surrounding nature.
The new routes represent an investment of €1.77 million, with 70% of the funding provided by European programs such as CRESC ALGARVE 2020 and ALGARVE 2030, as well as the national tourism board, Turismo de Portugal. The ALGARVE 2030 programme plans to build 250km of cycling and hiking paths across the Algarve. So far, 74km have been completed, including 24km in Vila do Bispo. Additionally, Aljezur is currently developing its 60km network.
This project is also great news for long-distance hikers and cyclists, as the Vila do Bispo Ecovia connects to the EuroVelo network, a system of long-distance cycling routes spanning 70,000km across Europe.
In the Algarve, there are three main regional paths: Litoral Sul, Costa Vicentina, and Guadiana. These paths connect urban areas, making them ideal for commuting, sightseeing, or a leisurely bike ride.
