The gallery’s new riverside home combines a rotating programme of established and emerging artists with a more accessible approach to contemporary art

Lady in Red’s move to Portimão’s waterfront last November marked a new chapter for the gallery.

Its brighter, more accessible setting makes it an inviting stop for established collectors, local residents and tourists strolling along the riverside.

The relocation was driven by a desire to develop the concept further, broaden its reach and create a more dynamic space.

“The Portimão waterfront immediately felt like the right environment for us. It’s a beautiful, open location with plenty of natural light, a wonderful sea breeze and much better parking possibilities,” explains co-founder and director Liz Roberts.

Although smaller than its previous home and arranged over a single floor, the gallery’s large windows create a greater sense of space whilst maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. Its more compact dimensions also encourage careful curation and frequent changes to the works on display, many of which can be seen through the windows from outside the gallery.

Rather than following a traditional exhibition programme, with the same works remaining on display for several months, Lady in Red takes a more fluid, rotating approach.

From September to December, works by Caelyn Robertson, Ernesto Mies, Stela Barreto, Paulo Gago, Kateryna Ilchuk and Dagoberto Silva are among those taking centre stage, alongside other artists represented by the gallery.

The full collection can also be explored online, where visitors can keep up with new arrivals and discover the gallery’s wider roster of artists.

“We regularly receive new works and rotate the pieces on display, keeping the gallery fresh and giving visitors a reason to return and discover something different,” says Liz.

“This also allows us to showcase the breadth of our artists’ work and introduce new artists and artistic styles to our audience throughout the year.”

Looking ahead, the ambition is to establish Lady in Red as a recognised name on the cultural and artistic scene in Portimão and the wider Algarve.

The gallery plans to continue working with established artists whilst introducing emerging talent and developing collaborations and initiatives that bring artists, collectors and the local community closer together.

More than simply a place to buy art, Lady in Red aims to become a destination for contemporary art in its own right. “Ultimately, we want Lady in Red to remain a lively and constantly evolving space, a place where people can come not only to buy art, but also to discover, experience and connect with contemporary art,” concludes Liz.
