The festival’s free concerts celebrate sacred music, local heritage and artistic works by both Portuguese and international composers

The Lagoa Sacred Music Festival returns for its sixth edition this February, bringing two free concerts to churches across the municipality, with the aim of promoting Lagoa’s religious and artistic heritage, whilst showcasing sacred spaces, musicians, instruments and works by Portuguese and international composers.

Across two evenings, audiences are invited to experience intimate performances in historic church settings.

The first concert takes place on February 8 at 5pm at Vale d’el Rei Catholic Church (Igreja de Vale D’el Rei), featuring Salomé Matias on flute and Tiago Santos on clarinet.

On February 15, also at 5pm, Estômbar Main Catholic Church (Igreja Matriz de Estômbar) hosts Eduardo Ramos, performing voice and alaúde, alongside the Ideias do Levante Choir from Lagoa.

The initiative is organised by Ideias do Levante, in partnership with the Municipality of Lagoa, with support from the parishes of Nossa Senhora da Luz (Lagoa) and São Tiago Maior in Estômbar.

According to Roberto Estorninho, president of Ideias do Levante, this year’s programme focuses on collaboration and exchange. “This edition will bring together various projects centred on sacred music, fostering an exchange between institutions, artists/musicians, and the public. This will provide an interesting dynamic and will certainly highlight and promote the people, venues, and local heritage,” he said.

All concerts are free to attend and recommended for audiences aged 6 and over, with entry subject to the venue’s capacity. Whilst admission is free, donations are welcome and help support both Ideias do Levante and the host churches.

Further information about the association and its activities is available through the Ideias do Levante Helpdesk.

Founded in 1995, Ideias do Levante is a cultural association based in Lagoa, with an extension in Portimão at Espaço Portas do Sol. Its work spans cultural training, production and promotion, including regular and one-off projects in the performing arts as well as health and wellbeing initiatives.
