Over 100 new berths and upgraded facilities planned

Lagos Marina has launched a €12.5 million expansion project, with construction starting last week. The development will add 102 new berths for vessels between 10 and 30 metres, increasing capacity in the outer harbour. The marina currently offers 474 berths, with the new spaces expected to be ready by September.

As part of the project, marina management company Marlagos will invest €3 million to compensate for former fishing areas on land and water. Plans include 55 berths for professional fishing vessels, 30 fishing warehouses covering more than 400sqm, 170 spaces for local recreational boats with floating pontoons, and 41 berths for the Lagos Sailing Club, which will also gain new facilities.

“These spaces are intended for small boats owned by local people, at lower costs, to give everyone access to enjoy the sea,” said Martinho Fortunato, CEO of Marlagos.

The expansion will also give new life to a neglected area of the town. New additions include fishing gear storage, 135 parking spaces, a Yacht Club with event and nautical activity areas, and eight commercial units.

The Yacht Club will feature two floors, with shops and terraces on the lower level, as well as public facilities. The upper floor will include a multipurpose space, indoor swimming pool, lounge area and 360-degree viewpoint.

Architect Mário Martins said the building will be “very light, transparent and contemporary” and “the colour of sand and very elegant”.

Whilst the new berths are due to open in September, work on the surrounding land areas is expected to continue until 2027. The marina currently generates between €17 million and €30 million per year and supports 106 companies employing around 1,350 people.
