Immersive characters bring a festive atmosphere to Lagoa’s streets

Lagoa will host the 11th edition of its Christmas street-performance tradition, bringing two days of stunning artistic displays to the town centre, described as the oldest of its kind in southern Portugal.

Taking place on December 12, Friday (3pm and 6pm) and December 13 (10am to 1pm) along Rua 25 de Abril and Largo 5 de Outubro, the Living Statues tradition brings together some of Portugal’s best artists.

Sixteen specialists in the art of immobility will take up their positions throughout Lagoa, interpreting characters inspired by nativity themes, historic figures, religion, literature and everyday professions.

Visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite as part of the Public Award, whilst a Jury Award will also be presented.

The event, free to attend, aims to promote and elevate this unique performative art form, showcasing some of the best national artists whilst also energising Lagoa’s town centre and supporting local commerce during the festive season, the municipal council of Lagoa said in a statement.
