Arrebita Food Festival is almost here, bringing haute cuisine to Portimão

The festival has established itself as a living showcase of new-age Portuguese cuisine and “a manifesto for the democratisation of gastronomy”

The 6th edition of the Arrebita food festival returns to Portimão from September 5-7, this year with more days and more chefs. The event will once again take place on the city centre’s Alameda da Praça da República.

Haute cuisine will be brought to the streets and be within everyone’s reach, with dishes priced at €7.50, giving visitors the chance to taste the best the country has to offer, “without reservations, dress codes or barriers”.

The festival opens on Friday with the Grande Arrozada – Limited Edition, an exclusive partnership with Bom Sucesso. Five chefs will each prepare a unique rice dish, ranging from the traditional to the unexpected. With 350 servings of each recipe being served from 6pm until they run out.

The following days, Saturday and Sunday, Alameda will be transformed into Portugal’s largest open-air gastronomic stage, bringing together 29 acclaimed chefs in a single weekend. This year, the spotlight shines on the Algarve, with 10 projects featured – five of which are from Portimão itself – a reflection of how the city is establishing itself as a gastronomic destination, offering contemporary and bold cuisine as well as pure and traditional fare, with the participation of the iconic restaurant U Venâncio.

The offering is more diverse than ever, featuring Portuguese meat from BEST FARMER Recheio, fresh local fish, vegetarian choices, and desserts prepared by four different chefs each day.

Entertainment will keep the atmosphere lively, with DJ music playing throughout the event, a mechanical bull for the fearless, and a Foosballtable for heated competitions.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to explore the wide variety of dishes and embark on a journey through the flavours of the Algarve and beyond. The festival runs daily from 6pm to 11pm, with free admission.

Launched in 2020 by Amuse Bouche, Arrebita has grown into both a national and international success story, having already visited Alentejo, Idanha-a-Nova, Guarda and, more recently, Famalicão. It was awarded the 2021 Grand Prize for Gastronomy by the Portuguese Academy of Gastronomy, and stands as the only gastronomy festival in Europe with organic certification (Arrebita Idanha Bio 2024).
