Explore Portimão’s heritage and creativity
Photography takes centre stage in Portimão this winter with the city’s annual Photographic Race exhibition at the Portimão Museum. Running until March 29, the exhibition brings together winning images celebrating both the creativity of its participants and Portimão’s unique character through the lens.
The Photo Race itself took place on May 16–17 of last year, using an original format designed to celebrate and revisit the spirit of the first edition, held in 2001. The competition followed a model inspired by that first race, with two categories: 24 hours and 12 hours.

In Category 1 (24 hours), participants submitted 24 images, whilst Category 2 (12 hours) required 12 images, with three winners selected in each category.
Participants were challenged to photograph the same 24 themes used in the 2001 edition, between 8pm on May 16 and 8pm on May 17.

The themes were: Points of light; Shadows and silhouettes; Illuminated windows or shopfronts; Letters of light; Not everything is darkness; People of the night; Shiny surface; Objects; Arade River; Bridge; Boats; Reflections in the water; Largo da Barca; Nature; Sculpture; Old house; Red among other colours; This door is interesting; They look like vertical lines; Stone or rock, it’s all the same; And the wave here so close; From bottom to top; Notice this detail; Between the sea and the sky, there it is.
Created by the Portimão Museum, the race saw 71 photography enthusiasts register across both categories. Participants came not only from the Algarve, but from different parts of Portugal and from 10 different nationalities, giving the initiative a strong international presence.
The winning works can be viewed free of charge, on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 6pm, and from Wednesdays to Sundays between 10am and 6pm.
