Multi-generational project gives new life to the park, and can be visited until the end of May

A community art project has given Portimão’s Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles a bright new look, bringing together residents from across different neighbourhoods and age groups.

The initiative, Dar Cor ao Jardim (Adding Colour to the Garden), was led by local community centres from Pontal, Coca Maravilhas and Cruz da Parteira, with support from senior social centres and Aldeia das Sobreiras.

Around 50 people, aged between five and 95, took part over several months, creating handmade pieces through activities such as crochet, crafts and painting. These works are now displayed throughout the garden, adding colour and encouraging more people to spend time in the new park.

According to Portimão council, the project focused on connecting generations, showcasing local creativity and creating opportunities for people to share skills and experiences. It also aimed to reduce social isolation and strengthen relationships within the community.

Organisers say the project goes beyond decoration, highlighting the value of community involvement and encouraging residents to take pride in shared public spaces. The installation will remain in the garden until the end of May.

The council also underlined the role of local community and senior centres in supporting inclusion, social activity and overall well-being for residents.
