The starting shot of the competition will be fired in Sagres – marking the beginning of a solo race across the Atlantic in a five-metre mini yacht
The Setka Atlantic Challenge 2025 begins in Sagres on November 11, with competitors setting course for Martinique, in the Caribbean. Participants will gather at the Clube Naval de Lisboa in the first week of November for the final stage of preparation before the start of the race.
The Setka Atlantic Challenge is an ocean race on a human scale, bringing sailing back to its roots. It celebrates fearless courage, seamanship, and craftsmanship, as competitors cross the Atlantic solo in a five-metre Setka mini-yacht, built by each skipper themselves.
Racers will have minimal technology, depending instead on their seamanship, self-sufficiency, discipline and mastery of the essentials.
The challenge was born in Poland, created by naval architect Janusz Maderski, designer of the Setka class. Open to sailors from around the world, the race has steadily grown its reputation, with previous editions successfully completing the Atlantic crossing and earning international attention within niche sailing communities.
More than just a race, it is a story of resilience, sustainability and human adventure – doing more with less, reconnecting with nature and pushing personal limits.
The regatta is free of charge, with no registration fee, and each participant covers their own expenses. To preserve the independent and amateur spirit of the event, an individual sponsorship cap of €5,500 applies.
