The Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Programme has expanded to include women aged 45 to 74
The Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) announced the launch of a new round of its Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Programmes, now including women aged 45 to 74.
The programme, which began last month, will allow “twice as many women” to benefit from early detection compared to the previous age range of 50 to 69 years. Duly registered foreign residents are also welcome.
As demand for the programme has grown, AOA is also acquiring a second Mobile Screening Unit, which will soon join the existing service on the road.
Both units are equipped with the latest high-resolution 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) technology and A.I., “ensuring women across the Algarve have access to fast, accurate, and high-quality screening”.
To participate in the screenings, the association encourages all eligible women to update their personal details with their local Health Centre beforehand, as to bring a valid identification, and proof of residence, if necessary, as well.
This way, “women will be automatically included in the Algarve’s breast cancer screening programme and invited to attend a free screening appointment when the Mobile Unit visits their area”.
“Early detection saves lives, and by expanding our age range and increasing our capacity, we’re making this vital screening more accessible than ever,” said AOA President, Dr Maria de Lurdes dos Santos Pereira.
Citizens with a valid Portuguese National Health Service (SNS) user number can also register directly for screening at rastreio.aoa.pt
