Lagoa mayor revealed plans for historic winery building
Lagoa’s historic winery, Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, located at the entrance to Lagoa along the EN125 road, celebrated its 81st anniversary with a heartfelt tribute to its roots and the local community.
As previously published, last September, the winery announced that it would have to vacate the space and temporarily relocate to new premises in Silves. The cooperative had sold its original building to a German investor in 2018 to help settle debts, continuing operations under a lease agreement. However, the building was recently put on the market, and the owner has now terminated the lease, requiring the cooperative to leave the premises.
The ceremony, held in October at the winery’s site, symbolically marked a farewell to the place that, since its foundation, has built a heritage deeply rooted in the Algarve’s wine-making tradition.
Entitled “81 Years of History: Tribute to a Legacy of Tradition and Identity”, the event was described by Lagoa Council as “a moment of celebration and recognition” that brought together employees, partners, producers, and representatives of the local community.
Jorge Matias, chairman of the board of directors of Única – Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, emphasised the importance of preserving the legacy of those who, over eight decades, have contributed to the growth and prestige of the winery, as well as to the appreciation of Algarve wines.
The programme included a multimedia presentation highlighting key milestones in the institution’s history, featuring photographs, testimonials, and documents that showcased the winery’s decisive role in shaping the wine-producing identity of Lagoa and the Algarve region.
An emotional tribute was also paid to individuals and organisations whose work and dedication left a lasting mark on the winery’s history. Among those honoured was the Municipality of Lagoa, represented by its mayor Luís Encarnação, through the Department of Culture and Tourism, in recognition of its ongoing support in promoting local heritage and wine-making traditions.
In his address, the mayor reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to ensuring that the winery will soon operate once again in Lagoa, this time in new premises. He added that the original building will be renovated to house a Wine Museum, featuring a wine tourism centre offering visits, tastings, and other experiences.
The ceremony also included remarks from António Cavaco, chairman of Única’s governing bodies, who underlined the importance of honouring the past whilst looking to the future, reaffirming the winery’s dedication to promoting the quality and authenticity of Algarve wines.
The event concluded with a toast to the future of Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, with Lagoa Council expressing its hope to establish a new home for the winery in the near future.
